Do you know your numbers?

One important step, in keeping your heart healthy, is knowing the following health “numbers” - your numbers!:

  • servings of fruits and vegetables eaten each day
  • minutes of daily physical activity
  • blood pressure
  • Body Mass Index (BMI)
  • cigarettes per day
  • blood cholesterol
  • blood sugar (glucose)

These numbers are important because their values affect your risk of having a heart attack, stroke and several other conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity.

People who appropriately control these numbers generally live 5-10 years longer than those who do not control these numbers.  Besides living longer, in fact they are more likely to enjoy a healthy life for a longer period of time.

How to Check Your Numbers

To check your blood cholesterol and blood sugar numbers, go visit your doctor. You can also check your own blood pressure or calculate your BMI at home!

What are the “Lucky” Numbers?

  • servings of fruits and vegetables eaten each day:  5 or more
  • minutes of daily physical activity:  at least 30
  • blood pressure:  less than 130/85
  • Body Mass Index (BMI):  between 19 and 25 kg/m2
  • cigarettes per day:  zero tobacco exposure!
  • blood cholesterol:  LDL (bad) cholesterol <100 mg/dl ideally (<70 for those with heart disease)
  • blood sugar (glucose):  <100 mg/dl

How can I reach these numbers?

For most people the answer is simply to eat healthy, be active, and don’t smoke. For some people medications may be necessary to help achieve some of these numbers.  For more details, check with your healthcare provider.
