Tobacco – Quitting for Good!

Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. It is harmful to every organ of the body.  The 200 known poisons in cigarette smoke can cause life-threatening diseases such as cancer, chronic bronchitis, heart disease and stroke. By reducing tobacco use, premature deaths, induced illness and excessive health care costs can be significantly reduced.  

Tobacco Facts:

• Youth are more likely to attempt to purchase cigarettes from stores that display tobacco advertising.
• More people die from tobacco related illnesses than murder, suicide, drugs, accidents, fires, and AIDS combined.
• There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes.
• Tobacco companies refer to youth as replacement smokers.
• Almost 90% of smokers started at or before age 19.
• Nicotine is just as addictive as cocaine or heroin.
• The state of Minnesota spends more than $2 billion a year on tobacco related health costs.
• In one year, the tobacco companies spend $257 million in Minnesota and $13 billion worldwide.
• Holding an average-sized dip in your mouth for 30 minutes gives you as much nicotine as smoking four cigarettes.
• Kids are three times more sensitive to tobacco advertising than adults and are more influenced to use tobacco by tobacco industry marketing than by peer pressure.
• Despite the restrictions placed on advertising targeting youth during by the STMSA of 1998, in 2005 the five largest tobacco manufacturers spent a new record of $250.79 million on smokeless tobacco advertising and promotion, compared to the previous record of $236.68 million in 2001.
